Everyone is invited, whether you plan to receive the Five Mindfulness Trainings or not. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with yourself, with each other in Five Stones, and with members of other sanghas in this tradition in Oregon and Washington. Scholarships are available, please indicate this on your application to attend the retreat in an earlier announcement.
Room for 3 and suitcases to the retreat at Great Vow Monastery May 19-22. We will leave Corvallis about 11 AM on the 19th, stop briefly in West Linn, and return around 5 PM on the 22nd. This is for the duration of the entire retreat, the usual way. If you can't get away because of work or other commitments, you may still receive the Five Mindfulness Trainings on Sunday morning, the 22nd. In that case plan to arrive on Saturday for lunch or dinner as the ceremony is early Sunday morning, the 22nd.
The Mindfulness Trainings are the core of the practice for the lay community
Thich Nhat Hanh, our teacher (Thay), has recommended that all lay friends who have taken the Five Mindfulness Trainings gather at least once a month to recite these Trainings. (As we do on the first Monday of every month.) Of course all others are welcome to attend since this is not an exclusive group and basically a chance to practice together and support each other along the way. .
The Trainings are our commitment to ourself, our teacher and the practice. Without this continuity of practice, we lose our connection with the teacher and the teachings. Join us every Monday at 5:30 PM in our practice space at Mystic Mountain, 435 NW Fourth Street.
We will study together with openness, lightness of heart, sharing of experience with the practice, and deep listening.
(There is still some possibility to have another opportunity to receive the trainings (precepts), but that is not definite yet. The location would probably be Portland. More details will be forthcoming IF this becomes available.)
